Terms of Service

Applies to the UNLOCKD web app and the UNLOCKD iOS app. Last updated: 31 July 2026.

These are the terms you agree to by using UNLOCKD. They are written to be read, not to be skipped. The parts that actually matter — that your master passphrase cannot be recovered, and that a free tool made by one person comes with limits on what he can be held to — are stated plainly rather than buried.

The short version. UNLOCKD is free and provided as-is. You own your data and can export or delete it at any time. If you lose your master passphrase, your saved passwords are gone permanently and nobody can recover them — keep your own backups of anything you cannot afford to lose. Don't use UNLOCKD to break the law or to store other people's credentials without their permission. Liability is limited to what you paid, or CAD $100, whichever is greater. These terms are governed by the law of British Columbia, Canada.

Who you are agreeing with

UNLOCKD is built and operated by Brad Brunton, an independent developer based in British Columbia, Canada ("UNLOCKD", "we", "us"). "The Service" means the UNLOCKD web app at unlockdsubscriptionsvault.com, the UNLOCKD iOS app, the optional browser extension, and the backend that syncs between them.

By creating an account or using the Service you accept these terms. If you don't accept them, don't use it — and if you've already got an account, you can delete it from Settings at any time.

Your account

The master passphrase, and what "no recovery" really means

This is the single most important clause in this document, so it gets its own section.

Your saved passwords are encrypted on your own device with a key derived from your master passphrase. That passphrase is never transmitted to us and never stored anywhere on our side. The practical consequence is absolute: if you forget or lose your master passphrase, your saved passwords cannot be decrypted by you, by us, or by anyone else, and they are permanently unrecoverable. There is no reset link, no support ticket, and no back door — not because we won't help, but because the design makes it impossible to.

That is the trade-off that makes the rest of the privacy promise true. It also means you should keep your own independent backup of any credential you cannot afford to lose. UNLOCKD is not a substitute for that, and we accept no liability for data that becomes unreadable because a passphrase was lost.

What you may and may not do

Use UNLOCKD for your own subscriptions and your own logins. Do not:

If you find a security vulnerability, please report it to the address below rather than exploiting it. Good-faith reports are welcome and will not be met with legal threats.

Your data stays yours

You keep all rights to the subscription entries, notes, and credentials you put into UNLOCKD. You grant us only the narrow, revocable permission needed to actually run the Service — to store your rows, sync them between your devices, and back them up. Nothing more. We do not sell your data, we do not share it for marketing, and we do not use your vault contents to train anything.

What we store and why is set out in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms. You can export everything and delete your account from inside either app; deletion removes your rows from the production database and is not reversible.

Price, and voluntary contributions

UNLOCKD is free, and every feature is included. There is no paid tier and no trial that turns into a bill.

You may optionally make a one-time contribution to support the work. A contribution is exactly that — a voluntary payment. It buys a supporter badge and no additional functionality, it does not create a subscription, and it is non-refundable except where a refund is required by law. Contributions made through an Apple in-app purchase are handled by Apple and are subject to Apple's refund process, not ours.

Because it is free, we may change, limit, or discontinue features. If the Service were ever to shut down, we will give reasonable advance notice so you can export your data.

Third-party services and trade marks

UNLOCKD lets you record subscriptions to services operated by other companies, and links to those companies' sign-in and cancellation pages. UNLOCKD is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any of them. Names and logos belong to their respective owners and are used only to identify the service you're recording — nominative use, nothing more.

Cancellation instructions and links are provided as a convenience and companies change them without notice. Always confirm on the provider's own site that a cancellation went through. We are not responsible for a charge you incur because a third party's process changed, and we are not responsible for the content or practices of any site we link to.

No warranty

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory — including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or uninterrupted or error-free operation. We do not warrant that the Service will always be available, that it will be free of bugs, or that it will meet your requirements.

UNLOCKD applies strong, standard cryptography and reasonable security practices, but no system is perfectly secure and nobody can honestly promise otherwise. Nothing here is a guarantee against every possible breach or loss.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, UNLOCKD and Brad Brunton will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, goodwill, or data, arising out of or connected with your use of the Service — including loss of credentials, an inability to access an account, or a charge you incurred because a subscription was not cancelled.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total aggregate liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the total amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose, or (b) CAD $100.

These disclaimers and limits are a fundamental part of the agreement between us, and they reflect that UNLOCKD is provided to you free of charge. They apply even if a remedy in these terms is found to have failed of its essential purpose.

Any claim relating to the Service must be brought within one year of the date it arose, except where applicable law does not allow a limitation period to be shortened.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or the limitation of certain damages. Where that is the case, the exclusions and limits above apply only to the extent permitted, and nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, for fraudulent misrepresentation, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or excludes any right you have under mandatory consumer protection law.

What you are responsible for

Liability runs both ways. If a third party brings a claim against UNLOCKD or Brad Brunton because of something you did, that is yours to carry: you agree to indemnify and hold us harmless against any claim, loss, or reasonable legal cost arising from

This does not extend to a claim caused by our own breach of these terms or our own negligence. That carve-out is deliberate: an indemnity written without one tends to be read as unconscionable and struck out entirely, which would leave nothing. A narrower clause that holds is worth more than a broad one that doesn't.

Suspension and ending your use

You may stop using UNLOCKD whenever you like, and delete your account from Settings.

We may suspend or terminate an account that is being used in a way that breaks the "What you may and may not do" section above, or that threatens the security or integrity of the Service or its other users. Where it is practical and lawful to do so, we will tell you why and give you a chance to export your data first.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change, this page is updated and the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will also be announced in the app. Continuing to use UNLOCKD after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms; if you don't, delete your account.

Apps obtained from the App Store

If you got the iOS app from Apple's App Store, your licence to use it is also subject to Apple's standard Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement. Apple is not a party to these terms, has no obligation to provide support for UNLOCKD, and is not responsible for the app or for any claim relating to it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this section and may enforce it.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. The courts of British Columbia have exclusive jurisdiction, except that if you are a consumer resident elsewhere, you keep any right you have under local law to bring proceedings in your own courts.

If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force. Not enforcing a provision on one occasion is not a waiver of it.
